    As supply chain snafus continue to impede U.S. economic growth, the Department of Transportation is soliciting ideas to improve the problems. Comments were accepted between Sept. 16 and Oct. 18 with hundreds of organizations and individuals already responding.

    DOT called for “practical solutions from a broad range of stakeholders to address current and future challenges to supply chain resilience.” Many of the comments came from truck drivers who cited low pay and driver detention as an impediment to driver retention.

    Producers Dairy, a Central California-based dairy processor and direct-to-store supplier, has placed an order for two Volvo VNR Electric trucks — anticipated to be the first commercial battery-electric Class 8 trucks to be deployed in California’s Central Valley. In late 2021, these zero tailpipe emission VNR Electric models from Volvo Trucks North America will begin to service Producers Dairy’s fleet routes from its Fresno manufacturing facility to grocery stores in communities along the 40-mile stretch of Highway 99 from Selma to Madera, California.

    With U.S. consumer prices increasing to their highest levels in 13 years, FedEx Corp. recently announced it will raise surcharges on deliveries into next year. Along with a series of surcharges effective beginning Oct. 4 at the start of the holiday shipping season, Fed-Ex will levy a 60-cents per package surcharge into 2022.
