In response to its union’s unwillingness to negotiate and alleging it is blocking much-needed operational changes, the nation’s third-largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier Yellow Corp. (YELL) has filed a $137 million lawsuit against the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). 

Back in March, IBT rejected Yellow’s proposals to consolidate operations at some of its terminals and eliminate duplicate drivers. Sales of the existing terminals would help Yellow pay off some of its $1.6 billion debt.

Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.) expands its footprint in North America with the establishment of an office in Texas and starts manual operations in preparation for commercial autonomous hub-to-hub transport. 

V.A.S. has opened an office in Fort Worth, Texas dedicated to driving activities to set up its first autonomous freight corridors that will run from Dallas Forth Worth to El Paso and from Dallas to Houston. To prepare for commercial launch, V.A.S. has also started to haul loads with trucks using drivers for key customers like DHL and Uber Freight to test aspects of the transport solution and establish frameworks and procedures for safe and reliable operations.

April Trailer orders in the U.S. plummeted by nearly half compared to last year, according to ACT Research, a business data and analysis service. In April 2022, nearly 20,000 trailers were ordered. This year that number is an estimated 10,000. The drop continued from March with figures showing that 16,800 trailers were ordered.

A group of Canadian trucking industry stakeholders recently held a press conference asking the government to investigate the Driver Inc. tax scam which involves a trucking company requesting that a driver who does not own a truck register as a corporation and then sell that driving service to the carrier.

The group includes the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), Teamsters Canada, Quebec Trucking Association (ACQ), and several logistics companies.

A load board, sometimes known as a freight board or freight matching service, connects shippers and carriers. Shippers and freight brokers post available loads and truckers find loads that are convenient to them. Load boards list potential jobs for carriers, but the actual transaction takes place via email or phone.

When the carrier responds to the load board, negotiations take place between the broker and carrier. Often, the broker will talk to several carriers about the same load to find the cheapest way to carry the freight.
